Manchester City defeated RB Leipzig 3-2 in the fourth round of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, thanks to an own goal, as well as goals from Enzo and Haaland. In an interview, Haaland said that his teammate Elliott Anderson has given an impressive performance in the face of such fierce competition.
In the 37th minute, Nico Aureli passed the ball back from the penalty area, and Leipzig defender Castello Lukebar inadvertently slid the ball into his own net while attempting to clear it, giving Manchester City a 1-0 lead. In the 49th minute of the second half, Brajan Groda broke free of his marker and passed the ball diagonally to Ridler Baku, who slotted it home to equalize for Leipzig at 1-1.
In the 58th minute, Ndiaye chipped a pass into the penalty area, and Enzo headed the ball into the net, giving Manchester City a 2-1 lead again. In the 61st minute, Nkunku dealt with the defense and passed the ball to Antonio Nusa, who controlled it and fired a low shot into the net, leveling the score at 2-2 for Leipzig.
In the 78th minute, Elliott Anderson dribbled into the penalty area and crossed the ball, where Haaland immediately slid in and scored, putting Manchester City back in the lead at 3-2. Ultimately, Manchester City defeated RB Leipzig, the top German club, 3-2 at the Red Bull Stadium.
Speaking about his teammate Elliott Anderson, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland said, "His performance has been incredible. He's had a fantastic start to his career at Manchester City, and that's exactly what we've been expecting from him. After joining a team like this, he has to integrate immediately and deliver."
“That’s how football is these days; the competition is fierce, and it’s not easy. Usually, players need time to adapt, and they also need time to get to know their new teammates and new managers. But Elliott Anderson’s performance was truly impressive, so we have to give him credit.”
Haaland said, "As for myself, 13 touches isn't a lot, but what's the most important thing? I helped the team win the game, so I'm very happy. However, we do need to do better in some areas."
"When we were leading 1-0, we should have been more aggressive in trying to score the second and third goals. We must continue to improve in this area."
Furthermore, Haaland has scored 13 goals in 9 appearances against Leipzig throughout his career. Haaland stated, "I've faced them many times in the Champions League while playing for Manchester City, and the same thing happened when I played for Borussia Dortmund. Leipzig is a very strong team, so I'm very happy."
“People can look at this from different angles. Some might think that it’s not easy to stay focused for 100 minutes of gameplay. But others might look at it from a positive perspective, thinking that all you need to do is concentrate for those 100 minutes and be ready when the opportunity arises. I would lean more towards the second view.”
