Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool will become stronger in adversity after their first Champions League defeat.

Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 2-3 to Fenerbahce in a key fourth-round match of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, despite goals from Tre Nioni and Isak. Virgil van Dijk stated that setbacks and adversity help the team become stronger, while emphasizing that conceding goals and being overturned by opponents must not be tolerated.

Szoboszlai's cross in the 25th minute was cleared, and Tre Nionni immediately followed up with a powerful shot to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead. In the 29th minute, Fenerbahce won a free kick, which Greenwood took directly, and the ball hit the wall and bounced into the net, leveling the score at 1-1.

In the 69th minute of the second half, Gakpo received the ball and chipped it into the penalty area from the left wing. Isak headed the ball into the net, giving Liverpool a 2-1 lead again. In the 73rd minute, Kante chipped the ball into the penalty area, and Gakpo made a mistake while clearing it. Archie Brown then tapped the ball into the empty net, leveling the score at 2-2 for Fenerbahce.

In the 79th minute, Archie Brown delivered a cross from the right wing, and Vedat Muriqui headed the ball into the net, giving Fenerbahce a 3-2 lead over Liverpool. Ultimately, Liverpool suffered a 2-3 defeat away to Fenerbahce.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said: "Everyone is disappointed, and they certainly have reason to be. We shouldn't have lost the game this way, but it's happened, and Fenerbahce played very well. After the last game against Arsenal, I mentioned that as a team, we must go through good times together and also face downtime together."

"These experiences will only bring our team closer together and ultimately benefit us greatly. Nobody wants to lose, especially not in this way, but this experience should help us do better in the near future."

Van Dijk emphasized, "We absolutely cannot accept defeat, especially not in this way. This situation obviously cannot continue. There were many disappointing aspects to this game, but the main reason was undoubtedly the number of possessions we lost and the way we conceded. So, we still have a lot to deal with."

"Three of the goals we conceded came from set pieces. So far, we have been doing a good job defending set pieces, but in this game, we had a problem with concentration and were not prepared for the first and second balls. This loss is really hard to accept."

On the other hand, Liverpool will travel to face Crystal Palace in the next round of the Premier League. Currently, Andoni Iraola's team is in 5th place with 15 points, one point behind 4th-placed Chelsea.

Van Dijk added, "We will prepare well, both physically and mentally, and then turn our attention to the next game. Playing away against Crystal Palace is never easy, and I don't think this time will be any different."
