The Athletic's Liverpool team correspondent Gregg Evans, exclusively reported exclusively on Wednesday that Liverpool has begun contract extension talks with the club's England U21s international defensive midfielder wonderkid Trey Nyoni.
According to Evans, Nyoni has broken into the first-team setup following a series of mature and impressive performances. In recognition of his development, the Reds have initiated discussions regarding an extension to his current contract, which is set to run until 2028.
While the negotiations are still in the very early stages and the final outcome remains uncertain, it is clear that Nyoni is the kind of prodigious talent whom fans would love to see stay at the club for the long term.
About Trey Nyoni
Trey Nyoni, who is still only 19 years old, was born on June 30, 2007 in Leicester, England. He is 1.80 meters tall and primarily plays as a defensive midfielder but is also capable of operating as an attacking midfielder. He holds dual English and Zimbabwean citizenship.
Nyoni joined the Leicester City youth academy at the age of six and began representing the club’s U18s side in the summer of 2021.
As a member of the England U16s national team, Nyoni helped his side win the Montague Tournament in France in April 2023. He also made his debut for Leicester City’s U21 steam in a match against Porto’s U21s in 2022.
In August 2023, Nyoni moved to Liverpool for a fee of £2 million before completing his Liverpool first-team debut by coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup match against Southampton, at just 16 years old.
Since joining the Reds, Nyoni has so far made 32 appearances for the Premier League giants across all competitions, scoring one goal, providing one assist, and winning the Carabao Cup once.
